[Canada] Penalty and interest relief for Phoenix payroll errors

[Canada] Penalty and interest relief for Phoenix payroll errors
25 Jul 2025

In Canada, the government has advised any taxpayers who believe the penalties and interest assessed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the 2016 tax year and onward are a direct result of Phoenix payroll system errors, may submit a claim under the Phoenix Claims Process, Government of Canada reports.

The Phoenix Claims Process is administered by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.

Each claim will reportedly be considered on its individual merits and settled based on valid receipts and other supporting documentation.

The government has advised anyone not reimbursed through the Phoenix Claims Process for the penalties and interest assessed by the CRA to submit a request for review under the taxpayer relief provisions.

Affected individuals can receive more information and help here and are advised to include the decision letter from their department or agency and any relevant documents when submitting a request.

Further information on the tax implications of Phoenix payroll issues is available on the government’s website under Frequently Asked Questions.
