In Canada, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister of Labour has announced the launch of a new campaign, Your Rights at Work, Government of Newfoundland & Labrador reports.
According to the Honourable Pam Parsons, the initiative aims to inform workers, particularly young and non-unionised employees, of their rights in the workplace and help employers understand their responsibilities under provincial labour legislation.
An updated Labour Standards booklet has reportedly been released as part of the campaign. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers under the Labour Standards Act.
The booklet is now available online and will soon be available in print at employment centres across the province. To further raise awareness, posters and bookmarks will be distributed to employment centres and schools.
Anyone wishing to request a copy of the Your Rights at Work booklet can contact Labour Standards at (877) 563-1063 or visit LabourStandards@gov.nl.ca.
Honourable Pam Parsons - Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister of Labour - said, “Every year, thousands of young people enter the workforce for the first time. It is important that they understand their rights and protections under the Labour Standards Act, and that employers are equally informed of their responsibilities.
"This campaign is about raising awareness and ensuring both workers and employers know where to go for accurate information and support. With more than 25,000 non-unionised workers ages 15 to 24 in Newfoundland and Labrador, this campaign is designed to reach this demographic through printed materials and a series of social media posts to help build fair and informed workplaces.”
Alicia Sutton - Chief Executive Officer (Interim), WorkplaceNL - said, “Young workers ages 15 to 24 are at greater risk of workplace injury and illness, making early education on rights and responsibilities critical to building a strong safety culture. In Newfoundland and Labrador, understanding key legislation, such as the Labour Standards Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act, empowers young workers to develop safe work habits that last a lifetime.
"WorkplaceNL is proud to support youth-focused initiatives that promote injury prevention and safety awareness. Our free online Young Worker OHS Course and the Youth Safety Training Bursary Program are just two ways we are helping young people and their employers access the tools they need to create safer, healthier workplaces.”
